Robbery Suspect Arrested in Grimsby

Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) 8 District – Grimsby detectives have arrested a man in relation to a robbery.

The investigation by NRPS officers began on Wednesday February 8, 2023, at 12:55 pm, when they responded to a report that a female victim’s purse had been stolen from her arm as she walked in a parking lot.  Officers attended a grocery store located near the South Service Road and Casablanca Boulevard in the Town of Grimsby.  The unknown suspect left the scene in a Mazda  sedan.  The suspect is then believed to have used the stolen credit cards from the victim’s purse to purchase lottery tickets and gift cards at various businesses throughout the Town of Grimsby.  The victim (in her 80s) was not injured. 

8 District detectives were assigned to the investigation.  Detectives working with uniform officers were able to identify a suspect.  On Tuesday February 14, 2023, investigators located and arrested Matthew Cameron NORTON (37 years) of Grimsby.

NORTON is charged with the following criminal offences:

Robbery contrary to section 344(1)(b) of the Criminal Code Unauthorized use of a credit card contrary to section 342(1)(i) of the Criminal Code (2 Counts) Fail to comply with undertaking contrary to section 145(4) of the Criminal Code

NORTON was held in custody and will appear at a video bail hearing to the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines on February 15, 2023.
