Ontario’s reports new daily record of 3,519 cases with 89 deaths; Niagara Region reports 138 with no new deaths

Ontario government reported a new daily record high of 3,519 COVID-19 cases on Thursday, bringing the seven-day average to 3,141.

The Niagara Region reported 138 new cases, an increase from yesterday’s report of 110.

There were 89 new COVID-19 deaths reported in Ontario today. This brings the total number of deaths in the province to 4,856. There were no new deaths reported in Niagara after deaths in the region rose by 29 yesterday. In total, 171 people have died from the virus in the region.

“Ontario is reporting 3,519 cases of #COVID19 and nearly 65,800 tests completed. Locally, there are 891 new cases in Toronto, 568 in Peel, 457 in York Region, 208 in Windsor-Essex County, 175 in Waterloo and 174 in Durham,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Twitter Thursday morning.

Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Ottawa with 164 new cases, Hamilton with 146 cases, London with 115 cases, Waterloo with 129, Halton Region with 95, Guelph with 90, and Simcoe-Muskoka with 78. Other public health units reported 70 cases or less.

The Niagara Region case numbers are back above 100, after Tuesday’s slight drop with 89 cases reported. Today’s report of 138 is the same as the daily record of 138 seen on Dec. 29. The previous highest daily case count was 126 cases seen on Dec. 19.

The death count jumped by 29 yesterday, this is similar to the large death count jumps seen on Dec. 28 when it rose by 22 and Dec. 30, when it rose by 21, bringing the total number of deaths to 142. This is the first time the deaths have been updated since Dec. 30. deaths are reported three times per week by NRPH on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

1,472 cases in Ontario hospitals

Ontario has now had 204,145 total cases, with 172,571 cases resolved. There are 1,472 cases in hospitals, with 363 in intensive care and 242 on ventilators.

Hospitalized cases increased by nine, the number of those in intensive care increased by two and patients on ventilators decreased by four since Wednesday.

The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 4,729 with 3,620 resolved. Of those cases, there are 938 active cases, decreasing by nine since yesterday and 44 active outbreaks, same as yesterday.
