On October 24th, 2023, at 8:09am Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) officers assigned to 2 District (Niagara Falls / Niagara-on-the-Lake) responded to a motor vehicle collision with injuries on Beaverdams Road between Beechwood Road and Garner Road, in the City of Niagara Falls.
Upon arrival, officers determined a collision occurred involving a white 2009 Mercedes-Benz C350 that was travelling west on Beaverdams Road and a beige 2009 Toyota Camry that was travelling east on Beaverdams Road. The driver of the Toyota Camry, a 67 year old man from the City of Thorold sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision and was transported to a local hospital by Niagara Emergency Medical Service (NEMS) paramedics. Despite lifesaving measures, tragically, he was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Investigation has determined, the driver of the Mercedes-Benz C350 was impaired by alcohol at the time of the collision. She was placed under arrest at the scene by uniform patrol officers. She did not sustain any injuries that required hospitalization in the collision.
Zoey Anne Marie HUGHES (25 years) of Niagara Falls has been arrested and charged with the following Criminal Code offences:
• Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Death
• Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle Exceed Blood Alcohol Concentration
HUGHES remains in police custody at this time. She is being held pending a bail hearing scheduled to take place later today (October 24th, 2023) via video link to the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse, located at 59 Church Street in the City of St. Catharines.
Detectives assigned to the NRPS Collision Reconstruction Unit have assumed carriage of the investigation. They are being supported by detectives from the NRPS Forensic Services Unit.
