NRPS Deploys In-Car Camera and Automatic Plate Reader Systems

The Niagara Regional Police Service is enhancing public safety and accountability with the installation of In-Car Camera (ICC) systems with integrated Automatic Licence Plate Reader (ALPR) technology.

This investment is supported by a provincial grant aimed at increasing transparency in policing and leveraging technology to improve both community and officer safety.

ALPR and ICC systems serve as powerful investigative tools, capable of identifying licence plates associated with wanted or missing persons, stolen vehicles, and related Highway Traffic Act infractions. In addition, the in-car camera system provides an objective video and audio recording of interactions between officers and members of the public, further strengthening trust and accountability.

Implementation of the technology will begin on July 28, 2025, starting with Traffic Enforcement patrol vehicles. The rollout will occur in phases, with full implementation expected by Fall 2025.

The Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC) has issued guidelines for the appropriate use of ALPR and ICC by police services. The NRPS remains committed to upholding these standards to ensure the protection of personal privacy and adherence to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
