Serious Collision Investigation Bunting Road – Fatality – St. Catharines

On December 18, 2023, at approximately 3:05am 1 District (St. Catharines / Thorold) uniform officers with the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) responded to a report of a serious single car collision in St. Catharines.

Officers arrived on scene near the intersection of Bunting Road and Eastchester Avenue and found three injured persons. A white Honda with three occupants had struck a tree.

A male passenger in his 20s was found to be in critical condition and the initial NRPS officers began resuscitative efforts.  Niagara Emergency Services paramedics and personnel from St. Catharines Fire Service attended and took over care. Despite the efforts of emergency services personnel, the male died at the scene.

The second passenger a 19-year-old male was transported to hospital by Niagara Emergency Services paramedics with what is believed to be serious non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Honda has been arrested and transported to hospital for medical assessment. Cody Michael Black (29 years old) of St. Catharines has been arrested and charged with the Criminal Code offences of:

Impaired Operation – Cause Death Impaired Operation – Cause Bodily Harm

Black was held in custody for a video bail hearing to the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines on December 18, 2023.

The Niagara Regional Police Service Collision Reconstruction Unit has been called to the scene. They are being assisted by the NRPS Forensic Services Unit.

ROAD CLOSURES are expected to be in place into the morning.
