On October 23rd, 2023, at 9:00pm Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) officers assigned to 1 District (St. Catharines / Thorold) responded to a residential address located on Melody Trail near Arthur Street, in the City of St. Catharines.
Upon arrival, an interaction took place between uniform patrol officers and an adult male. As a result of the interaction, the adult male was shot by police.
Niagara Emergency Medical Service (NEMS) paramedics responded alongside members of the St. Catharines Fire & Emergency Services. Despite lifesaving measures, the male was pronounced deceased.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been notified and have invoked their mandate.
The incident is also being investigated by detectives from the NRPS.
Portions of Melody Trail and Arthur Street are closed to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The road closures can be expected to remain in place for the next several hours.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
As the SIU has invoked its mandate, the NRPS is prohibited from releasing further details.
