The Grimsby Garden Club has awarded 70 area gardens with 2020 Trillium Awards, which recognize the most stunning gardens in Grimsby.
This year, more than 200 gardens were nominated. Both residential and commercial properties were considered, and awards were given to homes and businesses with the most beautiful front gardens.
Also, this year, the non-residential category was expanded to include the access points of buildings and how signage is incorporated into the garden.
“A highlight this year is Evergreen Terrace, 275 Main St E, where residents contributed to the gardens around the building,” said Marilyn Cornwell, Grimsby Garden Club representative.
The Trillium Award program is co-sponsored by the Town of Grimsby with the Grimsby Garden Club. The club and its annual garden awards has a long history. The club was first incorporated in 1964, but its origins go back to 1895. That year, Edward A. Cole, founder of Cole’s Florist Inc., created the Grimsby Horticultural Society.
In 1969, the Trillium Awards program was introduced. The event has been running annually ever since for 51 years.
This is the fifth year that the Trillium Awards program has been based on nominations. Anyone can nominate a garden. Garden owners can also nominate themselves.
Each garden is assessed by a committee on its curb appeal, landscape maintenance, and landscape design. Additional criteria includes balance, unity/harmony, scale/proportion, rhythm/sequence, and focal area.
