Ontario is reporting 1,022 new cases of COVID-19 today, bringing the daily average to 1,367.
The Niagara Region reported 13 new cases today, a decrease from yesterday’s report of 28.
There were also 17 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 6,555 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported six new COVID-19 deaths on Tuesday. In total, 353 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 1,022 cases of #COVID19 and nearly 30,800 tests completed. Locally, there are 343 new cases in Toronto, 250 in Peel and 128 in York Region,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Tuesday morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Halton Region with 42 new cases, Waterloo with 41 new cases, Ottawa and Durhan with 25 cases, and London with 24. Other public health units reported 25 cases or less.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 17,819 vaccine doses were administered in Canada bringing the total number of vaccines administered so far across the country to more than 1,116,277. That means that 2.417 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine
Over 12,462 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 398,633 administered across the province so far. That’s 2.704 per cent of the provincial population.
Approximately 387 new doses were administered as of Tuesday morning. A total of 6,684 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes.
A total of 6,684 people have been vaccinated in Niagara Region by Niagara Public Health. Niagara Health says it has administered 2,417 vaccinations to health care staff.
The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 9,101. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 2.032 per cent of the region’s residents have been vaccinated so far.
Niagara Region trends
The Niagara Region numbers remain under 50 per day over the weekend and so far this week, with the numbers dropping to as low as 13 today. The last time the region saw daily case numbers that low was on Nov. 30 when 13 cases were reported.
Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. Numbers also remained below the previous daily record of 196 reported on Friday, Jan. 8.
The death count went up by eight over the weekend, by three on Monday, and by six today. This brings the total number of deaths to 353. Deaths are reported three times per week by NRPH on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
909 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 280,494 total cases, with 259,991 cases resolved. There are 909 cases in hospitals, with 318 in intensive care and 223 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases increased by eight, the number of those in intensive care decreased by 17, and patients on ventilators decreased by three since Monday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 8,227 with 7,297 resolved. Of those cases, there are 577 active cases, decreasing by 68 since Monday and 42 active outbreaks, down by one since Monday.
