Ontario is reporting 945 new cases of COVID-19. But, today’s case count from the Toronto Public Health is underestimated due to data migration to the provincial system.
The Niagara Region reported 21 new cases today, a decrease from yesterday’s report of 26.
There were also 18 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 6,614 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported four new COVID-19 deaths on Wednesday. In total, 357 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 945 cases of #COVID19 and over 68,800 tests completed. Locally, there are 258 new cases in Peel, 116 in York Region and 112 in Toronto,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Thursday morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Ottawa with 63 new cases, Hamilton with 46 new cases, Waterloo with 41 cases, and Durham Region with 33. Other public health units reported 35 cases or less.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 21,478 vaccine doses were administered in Canada bringing the total number of vaccines administered so far across the country to more than 1,175,467. That means that 2.474 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine
Over 14,717 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 426,836 administered across the province so far. That’s 2.895 per cent of the provincial population.
Approximately 354 new doses were administered as of Thursday morning. A total of 7,556 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes.
A total of 7,556 people have been vaccinated in Niagara Region by Niagara Public Health. Niagara Health says it has administered 2,417 vaccinations to health care staff.
The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 9,973. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 2.227 per cent of the region’s residents have been vaccinated so far.
Niagara Region trends
The Niagara Region numbers remain under 50 per day over the weekend and so far this week, with the numbers dropping to as low as 13 on Tuesday. The last time the region saw daily case numbers that low was on Nov. 30 when 13 cases were reported.
Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. Numbers also remained below the previous daily record of 196 reported on Friday, Jan. 8.
The death count went up by eight over the weekend, by three on Monday, and by six on Tuesday. There were no new deaths on Wednesday and four new deaths today. This brings the total number of deaths to 357. Deaths are reported three times per week by NRPH on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
883 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 282,511 total cases, with 263,044 cases resolved. There are 883 cases in hospitals, with 299 in intensive care and 211 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases decreased by 65, the number of those in intensive care decreased by 14, and patients on ventilators decreased by 15 since Thursday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 8,273 with 7,408 resolved. Of those cases, there are 508 active cases, decreasing by 28 since Wednesday and 41 active outbreaks, down by one since Wednesday.
