Ontario is reporting 847 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the 7-day average to 1,002.
The Niagara Region reported 14 new cases today, the same as yesterday’s report. Despite that, Niagara Region has entered the Grey-Lockdown tier of the province’s COVID-19 recovery framework, due to a recommendation by the region’s acting medical officer Dr. Mustafa Hirji.
There were also 10 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 6,729 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported one new COVID-19 death on Tuesday. In total, 362 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 847 cases of #COVID19 and nearly 34,000 tests completed. Locally, there are 257 new cases in Toronto, 170 in Peel and 131 in York Region,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Tuesday morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Ottawa with 53 new cases, Windsor with 44 new cases, Halton and Durham with 30 cases, and Hamilton with 29. Other public health units reported 30 cases or less.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 11,086 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Tuesday bringing the total number of vaccines administered so far across the country to more than 1,317,870. That means that 2.588 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine
Over 9,107 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 489,484 administered across the province so far. That’s 3.319 per cent of the provincial population.
Approximately 84 new doses were administered as of Tuesday morning. A total of 8,512 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes.
A total of 8,512 people have been vaccinated in Niagara Region by Niagara Public Health. Niagara Health says it has administered 2,417 vaccinations to health care staff.
The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 10,929. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 2.44 per cent of the region’s residents have been vaccinated so far.
Niagara Region trends
The Niagara Region numbers remain under 50 per day over the weekend and the beginning of the week, in line with the reports from last week and above the 13 cases reported on Feb. 9, the lowest daily case count since Nov. 30 when 13 cases were reported.
Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. Numbers also remained below the previous daily record of 196 reported on Friday, Jan. 8.
The death count went up by three over the weekend and by one today. This brings the total number of deaths to 362. Deaths are reported three times per week by NRPH on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
719 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 288,583 total cases, with 270,869 cases resolved. There are 719 cases in hospitals, with 298 in intensive care and 211 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases decreased by 23, the number of those in intensive care increased by six, and patients on ventilators increased by 10 since Monday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 8,399 with 7,714 resolved. Of those cases, there are 323 active cases, decreasing by seven since Monday and 26 active outbreaks, down by eight since Monday.
