Ontario is reporting 975 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the seven-day average down to 1,055.
The Niagara Region reported 23 new cases today, an increase from yesterday’s report of nine cases.
There were also 12 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 6,884 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported three new COVID-19 deaths on Tuesday. In total, 369 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 975 cases of #COVID19 and nearly 26,000 tests completed. Locally, there are 343 new cases in Toronto, 186 in Peel and 89 in York Region,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Tuesday morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Simcoe-Muskoka with 48 new cases, Waterloo with 40 new cases, Hamilton with 35 cases, and Durham Region with 35. Other public health units reported 35 cases or less.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 30,667 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Tuesday bringing the total number of vaccines administered so far across the country to more than 1,584,670. That means that 2.971 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine
Over 16,252 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 585,707 administered across the province so far. That’s 3.972 per cent of the provincial population.
Approximately 269 new doses were administered as of Monday morning. A total of 9,525 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes.
A total of 9,525 people have been vaccinated in Niagara Region by Niagara Public Health. Niagara Health says it has administered 7,251 vaccinations to health care staff.
The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 16,776. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 3.746 per cent of the region’s residents have been vaccinated so far.

Niagara Region trends
The Niagara Region numbers remain under 30 per day over the weekend dropping to nine on Monday, the lowest daily case count since last Thursday’s when three cases were reported. This was the lowest case count since Oct. 13 when one case was reported. Cases rose slightly today but remained under 30 with 23 cases reported.
Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. Numbers also remained below the previous daily record of 196 reported on Friday, Jan. 8.
The death count went up by one over the weekend and by three on Tuesday. This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in the Niagara Region to 369.
718 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 295,119 total cases, with 277,939 cases resolved. There are 718 cases in hospitals, with 283 in intensive care and 186 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases increased by 72, the number of those in intensive care increased by three, and patients on ventilators decreased by three since Friday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 8,501 with 7,866 resolved. Of those cases, there are 266 active cases, increasing by seven since Monday and 19 active outbreaks, up by one since Monday.
