Ontario reported 1,023 new COVID-19 cases on Monday and 2,247 cases over the weekend. The Niagara Region reported 14 new cases on Monday and 39 cases over the weekend.
Across the province, there were 1,185 new cases reported on Saturday and on Sunday there were 1,062 cases reported.
Niagara Region reported 17 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday and 22 cases on Sunday.
There were 16 new deaths reported on Saturday in the province, 20 deaths reported on Sunday, and six reported today. There have been 6,986 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
The Niagara Region reported no new deaths over the weekend. In total, 369 people have died from the virus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 1,023 cases of #COVID19 and over 35,000 tests completed. Locally, there are 280 new cases in Toronto, 182 in Peel and 72 in Ottawa,” said Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier of Ontario and Minister of Health, on Twitter Monday morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Hamilton with 53 new cases, Halton Region with 39cases, Waterloo with 39 cases, and Simcoe-Muskoka with 39. Other public health units reported 35 cases or less.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 23,984 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Friday bringing the total number of vaccines administered so far across the country to more than 1,911,043. That means that 3.644 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine
Over 17,424 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 704,695 administered across the province so far. That’s 4.779 per cent of the provincial population.
Approximately 76 new doses were administered as of Monday morning. A total of 10,652 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes.
A total of 10,652 people have been vaccinated in Niagara Region by Niagara Public Health. Niagara Health says it has administered 12,401 vaccinations to health care staff.
The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 23,053. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 5.147 per cent of the region’s residents have been vaccinated so far.

Niagara Region trends
Region numbers remain under 30 per day over the weekend, as the Niagara Region moves into the red-control tier of the COVID-19 response framework. See related story.
Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. Numbers also remained below the previous daily record of 196 reported on Friday, Jan. 8.
The death count did not go up over the weekend. This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in the Niagara Region to 369.
659 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 301,839 total cases, with 284,283 cases resolved. There are 659 cases in hospitals, with 280 in intensive care and 175 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases decreased by 24, the number of those in intensive care decreased by four, and patients on ventilators decreased by 18 since Friday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 8,597 with 7,958 resolved. Of those cases, there are 270 active cases, increasing by 14 since Friday and 14 active outbreaks, same as Friday.
