Ontario reported 1,745 new cases of COVID-19 today, bringing the seven-day average to 1,480.
The Niagara Region reported 48 new cases today, an increase from yesterday’s report of 22.
There were also 10 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 7,212 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported no new COVID-19 deaths on Wednesday. In total, 373 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 1,745 cases of #COVID19 and over 56,100 tests completed. Locally, there are 478 new cases in Toronto, 344 in Peel, 174 in York Region and 116 in Hamilton,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Thursday morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Durham Region with 96 new cases, Ottawa with 73 new cases, Niagara with 53 cases, and Thunder Bay with 52. Other public health units reported 55 cases or less.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 105,022 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Friday bringing the total number of vaccines administered so far across the country to more than 3,671,350. That means that 8.030 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine
Over 61,146 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 1,420,599 administered across the province so far. That’s 9.634 per cent of the provincial population.
Niagara Health reported 624 new doses were administered as of Friday morning.
A total of 14,432 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes.

The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 46,539. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 10.391 per cent of the region’s residents have been vaccinated so far.

Region numbers rose slightly above 30 on Sunday when 33 cases were reported. However, Saturday and Monday’s numbers were back below 30. Tuesday’s report of 51 new cases is the highest daily case count since Feb. 5 when 60 cases were reported. Wednesday’s report decreased slightly but was still above 30. Thursday’s report dropped below 30 and Friday’s report rose to 48.
Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. Numbers also remained below the previous daily record of 196 reported on Friday, Jan. 8.
No new COVID-19 related deaths have been reported since last week. The death count measured since the start of the pandemic is 373.
759 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 325,254 total cases, with 304,789 cases resolved. There are 759 cases in hospitals, with 309 in intensive care and 176 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases increased by 29, the number of those in intensive care increased by five, and patients on ventilators decreased by 10 since Thursday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 9,119 with 8,427 resolved. Of those cases, there are 319 active cases, up by 22 since Thursday and 23 active outbreaks, same as Thursday.
