Ontario reported 1,571 new cases of COVID-19 today, bringing the seven-day average to 1,676.
The Niagara Region reported 53 new cases today, an increase from yesterday’s report of 42.
There were also 10 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 7,263 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported one new COVID-19 death on Wednesday. In total, 375 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 1,571 cases of #COVID19 and nearly 52,000 tests completed. Locally, there are 459 new cases in Toronto, 309 in Peel and 143 in York Region,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Wednesday morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Ottawa with 89 new cases, Durham Region with 86 new cases, and Hamilton with 84 cases. Other public health units reported 85 cases or less.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 104,456 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Wednesday bringing the total number of vaccines administered so far across the country to more than 4,327,728. That means that 9.705 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine
Over 72,451 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 1,676,150 administered across the province so far. That’s 13.368 per cent of the provincial population.
Niagara Health reported 824 new doses were administered as of Wednesday morning.
A total of 18,182 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes.

The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 55,158. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 12.315 per cent of the region’s residents have been vaccinated so far.

Niagara Region numbers rose slightly above 30 on Saturday and remained back below 30 on Sunday and Monday. Tuesday’s numbers are back above 30 with 42 cases reported. Wednesday’s report surpassed 50 for the first time since Feb. 5 when 60 cases were reported.
Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. Numbers also remained below the previous daily record of 196 reported on Friday, Jan. 8.
One new COVID-19 related death has been reported over the weekend. No new deaths were reported Monday or Tuesday. One new death was reported today. The death count measured since the start of the pandemic is 375.
893 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 333,690 total cases, with 311,380 cases resolved. There are 893 cases in hospitals, with 333 in intensive care and 210 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases increased by 25, the number of those in intensive care increased by nine, and patients on ventilators increased by 17 since Tuesday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 9,305 with 8,550 resolved. Of those cases, there are 380 active cases, up by 31 since Tuesday and 18 active outbreaks, down by one as Tuesday.
