Ontario reported 2,380 new cases of COVID-19 today, bringing the seven-day average to 1,794.
Today’s case numbers are overestimated by approximately 280 cases “due to a data catch-up process related to the provincial CCM system,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Twitter Thursday morning.
The Niagara Region reported 25 new cases today, a decrease from yesterday’s report of 53.
There were also 17 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 7,280 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported new COVID-19 deaths on Thrursday. In total, 375 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 2,380 cases of #COVID19 and nearly 60,100 tests completed. Locally, there are 1,016 new cases in Toronto, 294 in Peel, 244 in York Region and 152 in Ottawa,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Thursday morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Durham Region with 90 new cases, Hamilton with 79 new cases, and Halton Region with 53 cases. Other public health units reported 50 cases or less.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 120,937 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Thursday bringing the total number of vaccines administered so far across the country to more than 4,514,813. That means that 10,184 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine.
Over 79,446 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 1,755,596 administered across the province so far. That’s 11.906 per cent of the provincial population.
Niagara Health reported 658 new doses were administered as of Thursday morning.
A total of 18,840 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes.

The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 57,114. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 12.752 per cent of the region’s residents have been vaccinated so far.

Niagara Region numbers remained below 30 this week except for Saturday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Wednesday’s report surpassed 50 for the first time since Feb. 5 when 60 cases were reported. Thursday’s report is back below 30 with 25 cases reported.
Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. Numbers also remained below the previous daily record of 196 reported on Friday, Jan. 8.
One new COVID-19 related death has been reported over the weekend or during the beginning of the week. One new death was reported on Wednesday and no new deaths were reported today. The death count measured since the start of the pandemic is 375.
894 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 336,070 total cases, with 312,709 cases resolved. There are 894 cases in hospitals, with 332 in intensive care and 212 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases increased by one, the number of those in intensive care decreased by one, and patients on ventilators increased by two since Wednesday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 9,328 with 8,567 resolved. Of those cases, there are 386 active cases, up by six since Wednesday and 21 active outbreaks, up by three since Wednesday.
