Niagara Region Public Health reported nine new COVID-19 cases over the weekend – seven on Saturday and two on Sunday. Of the nine cases, five cases are linked to previous ones and the other four are under investigation.
This brings the total number of cases in the Niagara Region to 828 and the total number of active cases to 57. The towns of Lincoln, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Niagara Falls, and Pelham reporting the highest numbers of cases.
The results may be cause for concern for the Niagara Region. Earlier this month, the number of new cases each day remained low, but in the last couple of weeks, the region has seen the number of cases gradually increase.
Niagara Region entered Stage 3 of Ontario’s reopening plan last Friday.
Niagara Region’s Acting Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Mustafa Hiriji, noted a rise in cases is to be expected as the region continues to reopen the economy. However, he warned that the latest reports should not be taken lightly. It should serve as a reminder COVID-19 is not going away and there is an ongoing need for vigilance against the virus.
