Ontario reported 3,215 new cases of COVID-19 today, bringing the seven-day average to 2,988.
The Niagara Region reported 133 new cases today, an increase from yesterday’s report of 73.
There were also 17 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 7,475 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported no new deaths today. In total, 376 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 3,215 cases of #COVID19 and nearly 49,900 tests completed. Locally, there are 1,095 new cases in Toronto, 596 in Peel, 342 in York Region, 225 in Ottawa and 187 in Durham,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Wednesday morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include London with 113 new cases, Hamilton with 103, Halton Region with 75, and Waterloo with 74 cases. Other public health units reported 75 cases or less.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 151,208 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Wednesday bringing the total number of vaccines administered so far across the country to more than 6,909,825. That means that 16.251 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine.
Over 104,382 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 2,726,221 administered across the province so far. That’s 18.489 per cent of the provincial population.
Niagara Health reported 4,007 new doses were administered as of Wednesday morning.
A total of 31,259 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes.

The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 92,829. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 20.726 per cent of the region’s residents have been vaccinated so far.

The region reported cases over 100 this weekend with 111 cases on Friday and 110 cases on Sunday. Cases were back below 100 for the remainder of the weekend with 82 cases on Saturday, 99 cases on Monday, and 72 cases on Tuesday. Case numbers rose back above on Wednesday with 133 cases reported.
Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. Numbers also remained below the previous daily record of 196 reported on Friday, Jan. 8.
No new COVID-19 related deaths have been reported over the weekend or beginning of the week. The COVID-19 death count measured since the start of the pandemic is 376.
1,397 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 370,817 total cases, with 335,983 cases resolved. There are 1,397 cases in hospitals, with 504 in intensive care and 311 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases increased by 236, the number of those in intensive care decreased by six, and patients on ventilators increased by one since Tuesday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 10,382 with 9,189 resolved. Of those cases, there are 817 active cases, up by 18 since Tuesday and 33 active outbreaks, up by two since Tuesday.
