Ontario reported 4,736 new cases of COVID-19 today, a new single-day record, surpassing the previous record of 4,456 reported on Sunday.
The Niagara Region reported 222 new cases today, an increase from yesterday’s report of 174.
There were also 29 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 7,639 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported one new death today. In total, 379 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 4,736 cases of #COVID19 and nearly 65,600 tests completed. Locally, there are 1,188 new cases in Toronto, 983 in Peel, 526 in York Region, 342 in Ottawa, 216 in Durham and 215 in Niagara,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Thursday morning.

Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 195,823 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Thursday bringing the total number of vaccines administered across the country to more than 9,094,688. That means that 21.708 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine.
Over 105,430 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 3,528,404 administered across the province so far. That’s 23.929 per cent of the provincial population.
Niagara Health reported 3,490 new doses were administered as of Thursday morning.
A total of 39,841 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes.

The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 120,087. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 26.811 per cent of the region’s residents have been vaccinated so far.

COVID cases rose and dropped throughout the the weekend and beginning of the week, with Sunday reported the highest daily case count since Jan.16 when 175 cases are reported. This was surpassed on Wednesday when 174 cases reported. Thursday’s report surpassed this and reported the highest daily case count since Jan. 11 when 471 cases were confirmed.
Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. However, numbers surpassed the previous daily record of 196 reported on Jan. 8.
No new COVID-19 related deaths have been reported over the weekend. One new death was reported on Tuesday, one new death was reported on Wednesday, and another new death was reported on Thursday. The COVID-19 death count measured since the start of the pandemic is 379.
1,932 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 403,571 total cases, with 357,591 cases resolved. There are 1,932 cases in hospitals, with 659 in intensive care and 442 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases increased by 55, the number of those in intensive care increased by 27, and patients on ventilators same as Wednesday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 11,515 with 9,781 resolved. Of those cases, there are 1,355 active cases, up by 142 since Wednesday and 31 active outbreaks, up by one since Wednesday.
