Ontario reported 3,871 new cases today versus 3,480 new cases on Wednesday. The seven-day average is dropping, now 3,810.
Meanwhile, the Niagara Region reported 166 new cases today, an increase from yesterday’s report of 146.
There were also 41 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 8,029 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported no new deaths today. In total, 391 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 3,871 cases of #COVID19 and over 56,900 tests completed. Locally, there are 1,172 new cases in Toronto, 901 in Peel, 392 in York Region, 292 in Durham and 147 in Ottawa,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Thursday morning.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 207,721 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Thursday bringing the total number of vaccines administered across the country to more than 13,033,987. That means that 31.462 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine.
Over 120,567 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 5,027,770 administered across the province so far. That’s 34.098 per cent of the provincial population.
Niagara Health reported 3,721 new doses were administered as of Thursday morning.
A total of 56,370 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes as of Wednesday. Thursday numbers were not yet available as we published this post.
The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 175,291. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 39.137 per cent of the region’s residents have received at least one vaccination dose so far.

Current COVID-19 tier: Province wide-lockdown until May 20.
Previous tier: Red-Control until April 8.
COVID cases remained above 100 on Saturday with 164 cases reported but dropped significantly on Sunday and Monday with 32 and 24 cases reported. However, this was due to a glitch that has now been corrected and updated. There were 101 cases reported on Tuesday, 146 cases reported on Wednesday, and 166 cases on Thursday.
Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. However, numbers surpassed the previous daily record of 196 reported on Jan. 8.
No new COVID-19 related deaths have been reported over the weekend. Three new deaths were reported on Tuesday and one new death reported Wednesday. No new deaths have been reported today. The COVID-19 death count measured since the start of the pandemic in the region is 391.
2,248 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 459,477 total cases, with 413,010 cases resolved. There are 2,248 cases in hospitals, with 884 in intensive care and 620 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases decreased by 33, the number of those in intensive care increased by seven, and the number of patients on ventilators increased by 15 since Tuesday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 13,704 with 10,324 resolved. Of those cases, there are 2,989 active cases, up by 136 since Wednesday and 17 active outbreaks, same as Wednesday.
