Ontario reports fewer than 3,000 COVID cases for 2nd straight day; Niagara reports 123

Ontario reported 2,941 new cases today versus 2,791 new cases on Tuesday, the lowest case count in over a month.

Meanwhile, the Niagara Region reported 123 new cases today, a slight increase from yesterday’s report of 116. Niagara’s lowest case count in a month is 73 reported Apr. 6. However, a staggering decline appears to be trending in the region.

There were also 44 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 8,187 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.

Niagara Region reported no new deaths today. In total, 395 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.

“Ontario is reporting 2,941 cases of #COVID19 and nearly 45,800 tests completed. Locally, there are 924 new cases in Toronto, 565 in Peel, 254 in York Region, 171 in Durham and 149 in Hamilton,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Wednesday morning.

Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara

More than 193,664 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Wednesday bringing the total number of vaccines administered across the country to more than 14,477,898. That means that 35.014 per cent of the Canadian population have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

Over 132,603 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 5,599,723 administered across the province so far. That’s 37.977 per cent of the provincial population.

Niagara Health reported 2,456 new doses were administered as of Wednesday morning.

A total of 67,238 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes as of Wednesday.

The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 191,097. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 42.666 per cent of the region’s residents have received at least one vaccination dose so far.

Previous tier: Red-Control until April 8.

COVID cases remained above 100 over the weekend with 110 cases on Saturday and 113 cases on Sunday. Cases fell below 100 on Monday with 96 cases reported and are back above 100 on Tuesday and Wednesday with 116 and 123 cases reported.

Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. However, numbers surpassed the previous daily record of 196 reported on Jan. 8.

Three new COVID-19 related deaths have been reported over the weekend. No new deaths were reported on Tuesday or Wednesday. The COVID-19 death count measured since the start of the pandemic in the region is 395.

2,075 cases in Ontario hospitals

Ontario has now had 479,633 total cases, with 436,470 cases resolved. There are 2,075 cases in hospitals, with 882 in intensive care and 609 on ventilators.

Hospitalized cases decreased by 92, the number of those in intensive care decreased by four, and the number of patients on ventilators increased by 11 since Tuesday.

The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 14,367 with 11,917 resolved. Of those cases, there are 2,055 active cases, down by 15 since Wednesday and 24 active outbreaks, up by three since Wednesday.
