Ontario reported 1,273 new cases today, up slightly from the 1,135 new cases on Thursday. This brings the seven-day average to 1,353.
Meanwhile, the Niagara Region reported 22 new cases today, a decrease from yesterday’s report of 56.
There were also 14 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 8,711 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported no new deaths today. In total, 405 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 1,273 cases of #COVID19 and nearly 40,900 tests completed. Locally, there are 269 new cases in Toronto, 268 in Peel, 101 in Ottawa, 78 in Hamilton and 72 in Durham,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Friday morning.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 304,006 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Friday bringing the total number of vaccines administered across the country to more than 22,651,319. That means that 54.701 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine.
Over 159,775 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 8,690,473 administered across the province so far. That’s 58.938 per cent of the provincial population.
Niagara Health reported 4,538 new doses were administered as of Friday morning.
A total of 100,939 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes as of Friday.
The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 274,200. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 61.221 per cent of the region’s residents have received at least one vaccination dose so far.

COVID cases remained under 50 over the long weekend with 33 case on Saturday, 32 on Sunday, 30 on Monday, and 27 today. Cases rose slightly on Wednesday with 40 cases reported. Cases surpassed 50 on Thursday with 58 cases reported. Cases dropped on Friday with 22 cases reported.
Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. However, numbers surpassed the previous daily record of 196 reported on Jan. 8.
No new COVID-19 related deaths have been reported over the weekend or week. Since the start of the pandemic, the COVID-19 death count in the region is 405.
1,023 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 528,453 total cases, with 504,304 cases resolved. There are 1,023 cases in hospitals, with 645 in intensive care, and 458 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases decreased by 48, and the number of those in intensive care decreased by five, and the number of those on ventilators increased by six since Thursday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 15,680 with 14,478 resolved. Of those cases, there are 797 active cases, down by 58 since Thursday and 14 active outbreaks, up by one since Thursday.
