Ontario reports 411 new COVID-19 cases; Niagara Region reports 29

Ontario reported 411 new cases today, down from Tuesday’s report of 469. This brings the seven-day average to 657.

Meanwhile, the Niagara Region reported 29 new cases today, the same as yesterday’s report.

There were also 33 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 8,920 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.

Niagara Region reported no new deaths today. In total, 410 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.

“Ontario is reporting 411 cases of #COVID19 and nearly 30,500 tests completed. Locally, there are 97 new cases in Toronto, 72 in Peel, 35 in Waterloo, 26 in York Region and 25 in Hamilton,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Wednesday morning.

Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara

More than 266,561 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Wednesday bringing the total number of vaccines administered across the country to more than 27,122,208. That means that 62.591 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine. Approximately 8.768 per cent of the population is fully vaccinated.

Over 177,506 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 10,445,119 administered across the province so far. That’s 70.838 per cent of the provincial population.

Niagara Health reported 4,915 new doses were administered as of Wednesday morning.

A total of 124,181 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes as of Wednesday.

The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 329,300. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 75.523 per cent of the region’s residents have received at least one vaccination dose so far.

COVID cases remained under 50 over the weekend with 46 cases on Saturday and 29 cases on Sunday. There were nine cases reported on Monday, the lowest daily case count since February 18 when three cases were reported. Cases rose to 29 cases on Tuesday and remained the same on Wednesday.

Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. However, numbers surpassed the previous daily record of 196 reported on Jan. 8.

Two new COVID-19 related deaths have been reported over the weekend. One new death was reported on Tuesday. No new deaths were reported today. Since the start of the pandemic, the COVID-19 death count in the region is 410.

571 cases in Ontario hospitals

Ontario has now had 537,487 total cases, with 521,743 cases resolved. There are 571 cases in hospitals, with 466 in intensive care, and 314 on ventilators.

Hospitalized cases increased by 24, and the number of those in intensive care decreased by 31, and the number of those on ventilators decreased by 25 since Tuesday.

The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 15,981 with 15,153 resolved. Of those cases, there are 418 active cases, down by 16 since Tuesday and 15 active outbreaks, up by one since Tuesday.
