Niagara Region Public Health reported Friday five new cases of COVID-19.
That’s on the same day a mandatory temporary mask bylaw is enacted in communities in the region. The bylaw came into force at 12:01 am today (Friday, July 31) and is enacted until Oct. 31 2020. (See more info on mask bylaw.)
To date, there have been 866 cases of the virus in the Niagara Region, which has an estimated population of 479,183 (2019)
Here are some more COVID-19 stats for the region as of July 31, 2020:
- 727 cases have been resolved.
- 64 COVID-19 deaths have been reported.
- 75 active cases of the disease currently.
COVID-19 is caused by the novel coronavirus, which is caused by close contact with an infected person.
The disease most commonly spreads because of contact with an infected person, or touching a contaminated surface, then touch your mouth, nose or eyes. Handshakes, hugs, or kisses can also transmit the disease.
There are seven active outbreaks in Niagara. Most of the region’s active cases are in the communities of Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake.
