Detectives Appeal for Witnesses After Rainbow Crosswalk Damaged in Niagara-on-the-Lake

On July 31st, 2023, Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) officers assigned to 2 District (Niagara Falls / Niagara-on-the-Lake) responded to a belated mischief complaint at the rainbow crosswalk located at the intersection of Anderson Lane and Niagara Stone Road, in the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Investigation has determined a suspect attended the crosswalk location on July 31st, 2023, between 3:00am and 3:10am.  The suspect climbed a nearby utility pole and applied what is believed to be black spray paint to a lens on a surveillance camera that was pointed in the direction of the crosswalk.  The suspect proceeded to deface the crosswalk by spray painting a profane word and doing a “burnout” that left visible traction marks.

The investigation has been assigned to the 2 District Criminal Investigative Branch.  There is no suspect or vehicle description currently available.  Detectives are appealing to nearby businesses and area residents to review their surveillance footage and report any suspicious behavior.  In addition, volunteer members of the Niagara-on-the-Lake Fire & Emergency Services who responded to the Anderson Lane fire station for an unrelated call for service at 2:39am on July 31st, 2023, are being asked to recall and report any persons or vehicles that may have seemed out of place.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the lead detective by dialing 905-688-4111, option 3, extension 1007730.
