The investigation into this September 5, 2023, collision has been ongoing by 1 District uniform officers.
The crossing guard sustained multiple serious injuries and as a result spent several days in hospital. She is now recovering at home.
On October 1, 2023, a 22-year-old driver from Hamilton was charged with the Ontario Highway Traffic Act offences of:
Careless Driving Causing Bodily Harm S. 130(3) Fail to Remain S. 200(1)(a)
The investigation determined that the 22-year-old defendant had been driving a 2021 GMC Sierra pickup truck, eastbound on Carlton Street near Haig Street in the City of St. Catharines. The defendant allegedly made an abrupt left turn northbound onto Haig Street. This turn caused another driver who was heading westbound on Carlton Street to swerve to avoid a collision with the defendant’s vehicle. As a result, the second vehicle (grey 2020 Ford F150 pickup truck) involved struck the crossing who was standing off the roadway. The defendant did not remain at the scene.
