Detectives with the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) have issued an update on the motor vehicle collision which occurred in a plaza parking lot on Welland Avenue in St. Catharines on December 2, 2025.
Tragically, the 85-year-old male pedestrian that was struck has died as a result the injuries sustained in the collision.
At this time, the identity of the male is not being released to allow the family privacy.
In compliance with the Community Safety and Policing Act (CSPA), and to avoid any conflict of interest, the Hamilton Police Collision Reconstruction Unit has been called in to investigate the collision as the driver was determined to be an off duty NRPS officer.

Original Release – Life Threatening Injuries in Parking Lot Collision
St. Catharines – On Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at approximately 9:45 AM, uniform officers with The Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) 1 District (St. Catharines/Thorold) responded to the parking lot of a plaza at the corner of Welland Avenue and Bunting Road for a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle.
Officers found an 85-year-old, St Catharines man suffering from injuries after being struck by a vehicle in the parking lot. That male was taken to an area hospital with what is being considered as life threatening injuries.
The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and was determined to be an off duty NRPS officer. In compliance with the Community Safety and Policing Act (CSPA), and to avoid any conflict of interest, the Hamilton Police Collision Reconstruction Unit has been called in to investigate the collision.
The parking lot will be closed while Hamilton Police conduct their investigation. Determination of the cause of the collision and any charges that may arise from the investigation will be the responsibility of the Hamilton Police Service.
