GRIMSBY – Police arrested a homeless man after the man allegedly took his 5-year-old son from the boy’s home and fled to Niagara Falls yesterday.
8 District detectives from the Niagara police were called to a residence on John Street in Grimsby Thursday afternoon to respond to a domestic disturbance and threats complaint.
The 36-year-old-man, who police say has no fixed address, had allegedly threatened a woman who is the mother of his children, and then took his 5-year-old son, and fled in a car. Police located him at 4:25 p.m. near the border of Thorold and Niagara Falls. Niagara police said its officers followed the man’s car around Niagara Falls from a safe distance, stopping at Lundy’s Lane and Beachwood Road. The man’s car hit an OPP patrol car that was assisting in the incident. The man was subsequently arrested. The boy in the car was uninjured, but he was taken to a local hospital as a precaution.
The man was arrested and charged with eight offenses, including, uttering threats (spousal), break and enter with intent, flight from police, and abduction in contravention to the custody order.
He is being held in custody pending a bail hearing, which was scheduled for today at a St. Catharines courthouse.
Police say the identity of the accused man is not being released as it would lead to the identification of the victim and witnesses.
The 8 District detectives investigating the case were assisted by uniformed officers from Grimsby, Welland, St. Catharines, the Traffic Enforcement Unit, Canine, Domestic Violence Unit, and the Child Abuse Unit.
