A kitten was abandoned in a carrying case in a Grimsby waterfront park, luckily it was found by a dog walker, and turned into a St. Catharines’ humane society Thursday.
It is a case of animal cruelty, however, while the incident was reported to the Ministry of the Solicitor General’s animal cruelty hotline, the organization could not act on the complaint because the person who abandoned the kitten is unknown.
The young cat, given the name “Midnight” since being found, was less than one kilogram and about six to seven weeks old when it was located in Murray Street Park in Grimsby. Midnight was abandoned with a full bowl of food. The door to the hard cat carrier the cat was found in was left open.
The woman who found the cat, identified only as “Lisa”, reported that the kitten was roaming freely near the carrier and that it seemed happy. But according to Kevin Strooband, Executive Director of the Lincoln County Humane Society in St. Catharines, the kitten would have been in serious trouble left any longer.
“While he was in a playful mood (when he was found)…he would not have fared so well had it been inclement weather or he met another animal,” said Strooband.

The cat was examined by humane society staff and was found to be in good health. It was given the name Midnight and is now in the care of the Lincoln County Humane Society.
“Midnight is in great shape and I’m sure the kitten has no idea as to what transpired,” said Strooband.

Midnight the kitten will be up for adoption next week.
