Ontario reported 615 new COVID-19 cases today and over 1,200 new cases this weekend. The Niagara Region report 11 new cases and its first new COVID-19 related death since July.
In Niagara on Saturday there were 10 new cases. On Sunday there were 16 new cases. There are 11 new cases reported today.
“Ontario is reporting 615 cases of #COVID19 as nearly 38,200 tests were completed. Locally, there are 289 new cases in Toronto, 88 in Peel and 81 in Ottawa. 58% of today’s cases are in people under the age of 40. There are 541 more resolved cases,” said Health Minister Christine Elliott on Twitter this morning.
On the weekend, the province reported a total of 1,219 new cases, with Niagara Region reporting 26.
There were 48 new deaths reported over the weekend in Ontario, with 40 of those added from the spring/summer due to ongoing data review. There were four new deaths on Saturday and four on Sunday. There were five new deaths reported today.
There was one new death reported in the Niagara Region, the first COVID-19 death reported in the region since July 13.
The Niagara Region reported steady numbers this past week. After the 24 cases reported last Sunday, daily numbers remained below 20 and ranged 9 to 12 cases for the majority of the week, except for Tuesday when five cases were reported and Sunday when 16 cases were reported.
Ontario has now had 54,814 total cases, with 46,360 cases resolved. There have been 2,980 deaths. There are currently 176 cases in hospitals, with 43 in intensive care and 26 on ventilators.
Ontario continues to see a rise in COVID-19 cases in hospitals. Generally speaking, throughout August and the beginning of September, hospitalized cases remained below 100. Now, the numbers continue to inch closer to 200. There was a slight spike in hospitalized cases in mid-July, however, the province has not seen numbers above 200 since July 1 when 209 hospitalized cases were reported.
The total number of confirmed cases as of Sunday in the Niagara Region is now at 1,139 with 940 resolved. Of those cases, there are 125 active cases and eight active outbreaks, one of those outbreaks being at Lundy Manor long-term care facility in Niagara Falls. There have been 65 deaths.
