Ontario reported 548 new COVID-19 cases today, a decrease from yesterday’s report of 615. The Niagara Region reports 17 new cases, an increase from yesterday’s report of 11.
“Ontario is reporting 548 cases of #COVID19 as over 42,000 tests were completed. Locally, there are 201 new cases in Toronto, 90 in Peel, 62 in Ottawa and 56 in York Region. 61% of today’s cases are in people under the age of 40. There are 546 more resolved cases,” said Health Minister Christine Elliott on Twitter this morning.
Public health units in Ontario that also reported higher cases numbers include the Halton Region, with 30 new cases and the Waterloo Region with 21 new cases. The remainder of public health units reported 20 cases or fewer.
There were seven new deaths reported today in Ontario, an increase from yesterday’s report of five deaths. There are no new deaths in the Niagara Region today.
Today’s report shows a six-case increase in daily cases from the previous day. The region reported steady numbers last week. After the 24 cases reported last Sunday, daily numbers remained below 20 and ranged nine to 12 cases for the majority of the week, except for Tuesday when five cases were reported, Sunday when 16 cases were reported, and today when 17 cases were reported.
Ontario has now had 55,362 total cases, with 46,906 cases resolved. There have been 2,987 deaths. There are currently 192 cases in hospitals, with 41 in intensive care and 26 on ventilators.
Ontario continues to see a rise in COVID-19 cases in hospitals. Hospitalized cases increased by 14 since yesterday. However, the number of those in intensive care decreased by two and the number of people on ventilators remained the same.
Hospitalized COVID-19 cases on the rise
Throughout August and the beginning of September, hospitalized cases generally remained below 100. With today’s report, the numbers continue to inch closer to 200. There was a slight spike in hospitalized cases in mid-July, however, the province has not seen numbers above 200 since July 1 when 209 hospitalized cases were reported.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region is now at 1,147 with 942 resolved. Of those cases, there are 140 active cases and nine active outbreaks, one of those outbreaks is at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Elementary School and is at Lundy Manor long-term care facility, both in Niagara Falls. There have been 65 deaths in the region.
