Ontario reported 851 new COVID-19 cases today and over 2,000 new cases over the weekend. The Niagara Region reported 36 new cases this weekend and four cases today.
In Ontario, there were 978 new cases reported on Saturday and 1042 new cases reported on Sunday, the first time case numbers have risen above 1000. The weekend numbers also surpassed the previous record of 939 cases reported on Oct. 9.
In Niagara on Saturday there were 13 new cases. On Sunday there were 23 new cases.
“Ontario is reporting 851 cases of #COVID19. Locally, there are 281 new cases in Toronto, 215 in Peel, 90 in York Region and 76 in Ottawa. There are 679 more resolved cases and nearly 28,700 tests completed,” said Health Minister Christine Elliott on Twitter this morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher cases numbers include Hamilton with 23 new cases, Halton Region with 27 new cases, and Durham Region with 26 cases. All other public health units reported 25 cases or less.
On the weekend, the province reported a total of 2,020 new cases, with Niagara Region reporting 36.
There were 13 new deaths reported over the weekend in Ontario. There were six new deaths on Saturday, seven on Sunday, and six new deaths reported today. There are 3099 deaths in Ontario.
There were no new deaths reported in Niagara Region over the weekend or today. The last death was reported on Oct. 19. There have been 68 deaths in the region from COVID-19
The Niagara Region reported cases above 20 on Sunday for the first time since Sept. 27. Lately, cases have ranged from five to 15 over the last few weeks. Saturday reported numbers within this range, but Sunday reported above it with 23 reported.
Ontario has now had 71,224 total cases, with 60,839 cases resolved. There are currently 295 cases in hospitals, with 78 in intensive care and 51 on ventilators.
Ontario continues to see a rise in COVID-19 cases in hospitals. Hospitalized cases increased by 19, but the number of those in intensive care remained the same and those on ventilators increased by four since Friday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region is now at 1351 with 1,176 resolved. Of those cases, there are 112 active cases, increasing by 19 since Friday and eight active outbreaks, up three since Friday.
