The Ontario government reported 2,408 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, up from yesterday’s report of 2,202 cases and bringing the seven-day average to 2,304.
The Niagara Region reported 79 new cases today, up from yesterday’s report of 35 but in-line with the 82 cases reported on Monday.
There were 41 new COVID-19 deaths reported in Ontario today, This brings the total number in the province to 4,229. There were no new deaths reported today in Niagara. In total, 99 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 2,408 cases of #COVID19 and nearly 56,700 tests completed. Locally, there are 629 new cases in Toronto, 448 in Peel, 234 in Windsor-Essex County, 190 in York Region and 150 in Hamilton,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Twitter this morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Durham Region with 136 new cases, Halton Region with 88 cases, Waterloo with 80, and London with 72. Other public health units reported 60 cases or less.
Niagara Region trends
The Niagara Region saw slightly lower case numbers yesterday with 35 cases, but today’s numbers are closer to the cases reported Monday and during the weekend. There were 126 cases on Saturday, 92 on Sunday, and 82 cases reported on Monday, all surpassing the previous highest daily case count of 71 cases seen on Dec. 13.
Niagara Region is currently in the Red-Control level of the province’s COVID-19 response framework. This will change on Dec. 26 as the whole province goes into lockdown, lasting until Jan. 26 for Niagara and 26 other public health unit regions in Southern Ontario.
1,002 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 162,663 total cases, with 139,010 cases resolved. There are currently 1,002 cases in hospitals, with 275 in intensive care and 186 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases decreased by three, the number of those in intensive care increased by two and patients on ventilators increased by 14 since yesterday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region is now at 3,235 with 2,514 resolved. Of those cases, there are 622 active cases, increasing by six since Tuesday and 22 active outbreaks, up by one since Tuesday.
