The Ontario government reported 2,447 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, a new single day record, bringing the seven-day average to 2,306.
The Niagara Region reported 61 new cases today, down from yesterday’s report of 79.
There were 49 new COVID-19 deaths reported in Ontario today, This brings the total number in the province to 4,278. There were no new deaths reported in Niagara. In total, 99 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 2,447 cases of #COVID19 and nearly 64,600 tests completed. Locally, there are 646 new cases in Toronto, 502 in Peel, 263 in York Region and 173 in Windsor-Essex County,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Twitter Thursday morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Hamilton with 101 new cases, Durham Region with 92 cases, Waterloo with 82, Ottawa with 77, London with 67, and Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph with 63. Other public health units reported 60 cases or less.
Niagara Region trends
The Niagara Region saw slightly lower case numbers Tuesday with 34 cases, but today’s and yesterday’s numbers are closer to the cases reported Monday and during the weekend. There were 126 cases on Saturday, 92 on Sunday, and 82 cases reported on Monday, all surpassing the previous highest daily case count of 71 cases seen on Dec. 13.
Niagara Region is currently in the Red-Control level of the province’s COVID-19 response framework. This will change on Saturday Dec. 26 as the whole province goes into lockdown, lasting until Jan. 23 for Niagara and 26 other public health unit regions in Southern Ontario.
967 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 165,110 total cases, with 141,023 cases resolved. There are currently 967 cases in hospitals, with 277 in intensive care and 176 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases decreased by 35, the number of those in intensive care increased by two and patients on ventilators decreased by 10 since yesterday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region is now at 3,292 with 2,546 resolved. Of those cases, there are 647 active cases, increasing by 25 since yesterday and 18 active outbreaks, down by one since yesterday.
