Ontario surpassed 200,000 total cases as it reported 3,266 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday. The province now has 200,626 total cases, with 169,795 cases resolved.
Ontario also reported a new daily-record high for hospitalizations. There are 1,463 cases in hospitals, with 361 in intensive care and 246 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases in the province increased by 116, the number of those in intensive care increased by nine and patients on ventilators increased by one since Tuesday.
The Niagara Region reported 110 new cases on Wednesday, as deaths rise by with 29. In total, 171 people have died from the virus in the region.
There were 37 new COVID-19 deaths reported in Ontario today. This brings the total number of deaths in the province to 4,767.
“Ontario is reporting 3,266 cases of #COVID19 and over 51,000 tests completed. Locally, there are 805 new cases in Toronto, 523 in Peel, 349 in York Region, 208 in Windsor-Essex County and 206 in Waterloo,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Twitter Wednesday morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Hamilton with 153 new cases, Durham Region with 145 cases, London with 127 cases, Halton Region with 100, Ottawa with 94, Guelph with 64, and Simcoe-Muskoka with 57. Other public health units reported 55 cases or less.
Niagara Region COVID-19 trends
The Niagara Region case numbers are back above 100, after yesterday’s slight drop with 89 cases reported. This report is in-line with the case counts on Monday and over the weekend, each day reporting 100 cases or more. The reports did not surpass the new daily record of 138 seen on Dec. 29. The previous highest daily case count was 126 cases seen on Dec. 19.
The death count jumped by 29 today, this is similar to the large death count jumps seen on Dec. 28 when it rose by 22 and Dec. 30, when it rose by 21, bringing the total number of deaths to 142. This is the first time the deaths have been updated since Dec. 30.
Niagara Region, along with the whole province, is in the Grey-Lockdown tier of the COVID-19 response framework. The change started on Saturday, Dec. 26 and will last until Jan. 23 for Niagara and 26 other public health unit regions in Southern Ontario.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 4,595 with 3,477 resolved. Of those cases, there are 947 active cases, decreasing by 38 since yesterday and 44 active outbreaks, up by three since yesterday.
