Niagara Region reported nine new COVID-19 deaths today. In total, 205 people have died from the virus in the region.
The region also reported 190 new cases, an increase from yesterday’s report of 119.
Meanwhile the Ontario government reported 2,961 COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, bringing the seven-day average to 3,480. There were also 74 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 5,127 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
“Ontario is reporting 2,961 cases of #COVID19 and over 50,900 tests completed. Locally, there are 738 new cases in Toronto, 536 in Peel, 245 in Windsor-Essex County, 219 in York Region and 171 in Hamilton,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Twitter Wednesday morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Ottawa with 154 new cases, Waterloo with 146 new cases, Durham Region with 119 cases, London with 103 cases, Halton Region with 88 cases, and Lambton with 72. Other public health units reported 70 cases or less.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 19,086 vaccine doses were administered in Canada as of Wednesday, bringing the total number of vaccines administered so far across the country to more than 407,709. That means that 1.054 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine
Over 11,231 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 144,784 administered across the province so far. That’s 0.982 per cent of the provincial population.
An initial vaccine supply arrived in the Niagara Region Tuesday. We will be reporting the number of vaccines administered when the data is received from Niagara Public Health. A request has been issued today.
Niagara Region trends
The Niagara Region numbers skyrocketed to 471 cases on Monday, more than doubling the previous new daily record of 196 reported on Friday, Jan. 8. This is also the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region. However, it was due to a backlog of cases being updated.
Today’s report is moving up again closer to the previous daily record of 196 after yesterday’s report of 120 fell in line with the past week’s reports that remained above 100 after Tuesday’s slight drop with 89 cases reported.
The death count went up by nine today, and by 10 on Monday. This brings the total number of deaths to 205. Deaths are reported three times per week by NRPH on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
1,674 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 224,984 total cases, with 190,221 cases resolved. There are 1,674 cases in hospitals, with 385 in intensive care and 276 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases decreased by 27, the number of those in intensive care remained the same and patients on ventilators increased by 14 since Tuesday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 5,979 with 4,283 resolved. Of those cases, there are 1,491 active cases, increasing by 62 since yesterday and 47 active outbreaks, down by four since yesterday.
