Ontario reported 2,578 new COVID-19 cases on Monday and 6,478 cases over the weekend. The Niagara Region reported 135 new cases on Monday and 297 cases over the weekend.
There were 3,056 new cases reported on Saturday in the province. On Sunday there were 3,422 new cases.
Niagara Region reported 177 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday and 120 cases on Sunday.
There were 51 new deaths reported on Saturday in the province, 69 deaths reported on Sunday, and 24 reported today. There have been 5,433 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
The Niagara Region reported four new deaths over the weekend and six deaths reported on Monday. In total, 223 people have died from the virus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 2,578 cases of #COVID19 and over 40,300 tests completed. Locally, there are 815 new cases in Toronto, 507 in Peel, 151 in York Region, 151 in Niagara, and 121 in Hamilton,” said Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier of Ontario and Minister of Health, on Twitter Monday morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Windsor with 97 new cases, Ottawa with 92 cases, Waterloo with 85 cases, Halton Region with 79, and Durham Region with 76. Other public health units reported 70 cases or less.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 9,691 vaccine doses were administered in Canada bringing the total number of vaccines administered so far across the country to more than 580,433. That means that 1.445 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine
Over 9,691 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 209,788 administered across the province so far. That’s 1.423 per cent of the provincial population.
An initial vaccine supply arrived in the Niagara Region last Tuesday. A total of 1,416 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes.
Niagara Health said has vaccinated an additional 746 long-term care workers and high-risk hospital staff and physicians as of Friday Jan. 15 at 5 p.m.
That means a total of 2,162 people have been vaccinated in Niagara Region against a population of 447,888 (2016 census) meaning about 0.48 per cent of the regions residents have been vaccinated so far.
Niagara Region trends
Case numbers over the weekend and on Monday remained under the daily record of 471 cases last Monday, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. Numbers also remained below the previous daily record of 196 reported on Friday, Jan. 8.
The death count went up by four cases over the weekend and by six on Monday. This brings the total number of deaths to 223. Deaths are reported three times per week by NRPH on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
1,571 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 240,364 total cases, with 206,310 cases resolved. There are 1,571 cases in hospitals, with 394 in intensive care and 303 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases decreased by 76, the number of those in intensive care increased by seven, and patients on ventilators increased by 23 since Friday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 6,691 with 4,718 resolved. Of those cases, there are 1,750 active cases, increasing by 194 since Friday and 53 active outbreaks, with four new outbreaks since Friday.
