Grimsby Library runs virtual summer reading club

The Grimsby Library’s Summer Reading Club, for kids ages 0-12, is virtual this year.

Running July 6 to Sept 5, 2020, the annual event, sponsored by TD Bank, encourages children to read, while also celebrating Canadian authors and illustrators.

Due to COVID-19 restritions, the year it came be completed via the web or using a club booklet picked up from the Grimsby Library curbside.

The program gamifies reading. Each reader earns one point for every minute they spend reading. They also earn points for completing crafts and writing their own stories and jokes.

Progress is logged either virtually through the TD Summer Reading Club online portal or in a print booklet that’s available for curbside pickup from the library. Both systems allow readers to:

  • Track the books they read during the summer months
  • Learn new hands-on activities they can do at home
  • Participate in reading challenges
  • Set goals and track their progress
  • Discover new books
  • Win prizes
  • Fall in love with reading

This year’s theme is: Game On! It encourages young readers to embrace a team spirit. It teaches children about fun, collaboration and the power of their imagination.

Resources are available for children with print disabilities. Preschoolers and their parents are also encouraged to take part.

Last year, 2,000 local public libraries and over 600,000 children participated.
