The Niagara Region reported 471 new cases on Monday, more than doubling the previous daily record of 196.
However the spike is due to “an additional 388 cases due to clearance of a large backlog”, said the Niagara Regional Public Health on Twitter.
Niagara Region reported 286 over the weekend, with 139 new cases on Saturday, and 147 cases reported on Sunday.
Ontario reported 3,338 new COVID-19 cases on Monday and 7,388 cases over the weekend.
There were 3,443 new cases reported on Saturday in the province and 3,945 cases reported on Sunday.
The region reported no new deaths over the weekend and ten new deaths on Monday. In total, 196 people have died from the virus in the region.
There were 40 new deaths reported on Saturday, 61 deaths reported on Sunday, and 29 reported today. There have been 5,012 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date. (Hirji reveals death demographics.)
“Ontario is reporting 3,338 cases of #COVID19 and over 46,400 tests completed. Locally, there are 931 new cases in Toronto, 531 in Peel, 241 in York Region, 168 in Niagara and 165 in Waterloo,” said Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier of Ontario and Minister of Health, on Twitter Monday morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Ottawa with 159 new cases, Hamilton with 146 cases, Durham Region with 143 cases, London with 141, Windsor with 118, Lambton with 90, Simcoe-Muskoka with 84, and Halton Region and Southwestern with 81. Other public health units reported 70 cases or less.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario
More than 17,259 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Monday, bringing the total number of vaccines administered so far across the country to more than 336,862. 0.867 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine
Over 8,859 of today’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 122,105 administered across the province so far. That’s 0.84 per cent of the provincial population.
Niagara Region trends
The Niagara Region numbers skyrocketed to 471 cases today, more than doubling the previous new daily record of 196 reported on Friday, Jan. 8. This is also the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region. However, it was due to a backlog of cases being updated.
Numbers this weekend remained above 100, in line with the past week’s reports that continued to increase after Tuesday’s slight drop with 89 cases reported.
The death count went up by 10 today and by 15 last Friday after jumping up by 29 last Wednesday. This brings the total number of deaths to 196. Deaths are reported three times per week by NRPH on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
1,563 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 219,120 total cases, with 183,476 cases resolved. There are 1,563 cases in hospitals, with 387 in intensive care and 268 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases increased by 116, the number of those in intensive care increased by 18 and patients on ventilators increased by 18 since Friday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 5,675 with 4,041 resolved. Of those cases, there are 1,438 active cases, increasing by 425 since Friday and 50 active outbreaks, up by four since Friday.
