Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) detectives assigned to the 2 District (Niagara Falls / Niagara-on-the-Lake) Criminal Investigative Branch have continued to investigative a robbery that was reported to have occurred on June 25th, 2023, at approximately 8:30pm at Mount Carmel Park, located at 7806 Mount Carmel Boulevard in the City of Niagara Falls.
Investigation has determined, the male youth who alleged he was assaulted for not surrendering his running shoes to a group of four unknown teenagers lied to responding officers about what had actually transpired. After interviewing witnesses who came forward as a result of the initial media release, detectives have concluded a robbery did not take place.
The male youth was arrested by detectives for the Criminal Code offence of Public Mischief and released unconditionally (without charge) as an extrajudicial measure, in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The Government of Canada defines extrajudicial measures as the following:
“Extrajudicial means outside the court. Thus, extrajudicial measures aim to hold a young person accountable without proceeding through the formal court process. The Youth Criminal Justice Act encourages the use of extrajudicial measures in all cases where they are adequate to hold a young person accountable.
