On May 20, 2023, the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) became aware of allegations involving a Uniform Constable employed with the Service, following an unknown 911 call for service to a business in the City of Welland.
When 3 District (Welland/Pelham) uniform officers arrived, it was quickly determined that an off-duty member of the NRPS had been involved in an altercation; he was transported to hospital where he was treated and released. No one else was physically injured as a result of the altercation.
On Monday May 29, 2023, Constable Grant Yantha was arrested and charged with the following offences:
2 counts of Assault, contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code
Yantha was released from custody on a Form 10 Undertaking, scheduled to attend court on August 25, 2023 at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse, located at 59 Church Street in the City of St. Catharines.
Yantha has been a police officer with the NRPS for 1 year and was off-duty at the time of the alleged offences.
In accordance with the Police Services Act of Ontario, Yantha has been suspended with pay.
