Ontario is reporting 1,150 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the seven-day average to 1,026.
The Niagara Region reported 26 new cases today, an increase from yesterday’s report of three cases. Niagara Region remains in the Grey-Lockdown tier of the province’s COVID-19 recovery framework at least until Feb 26 when it will be reviewed.
There were also 47 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 6,820 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported two new COVID-19 deaths on Friday. In total, 365 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 1,150 cases of #COVID19 and nearly 65,400 tests completed. Locally, there are 376 new cases in Toronto, 264 in Peel and 108 in York Region,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Friday morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Ottawa with 73 new cases, Hamilton with 43 new cases, Waterloo with 41 cases, and Durham Region with 41. Other public health units reported 40 cases or less.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 26,500 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Tuesday bringing the total number of vaccines administered so far across the country to more than 1,380,789. That means that 2.651 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine
Over 16,967 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 518,834 administered across the province so far. That’s 3.519 per cent of the provincial population.
Approximately 103 new doses were administered as of Tuesday morning. A total of 8,795 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes.
A total of 8,795 people have been vaccinated in Niagara Region by Niagara Public Health. Niagara Health says it has administered 3,423 vaccinations to health care staff.
The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 12,218. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 2.728 per cent of the region’s residents have been vaccinated so far.
Niagara Region trends
The Niagara Region numbers remain under 50 per day over the weekend and so far this week, reaching the lowest daily case count since Oct. 13 when one case was reported with Thursday’s report of three.
Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. Numbers also remained below the previous daily record of 196 reported on Friday, Jan. 8.
The death count went up by three over the weekend, by one on Wednesday, by one on Thursday, and by two on Friday. This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in the Niagara Region to 365. Deaths are reported three times per week by NRPH on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
689 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 290,771 total cases, with 273,401 cases resolved. There are 689 cases in hospitals, with 269 in intensive care and 190 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases decreased by 69, the number of those in intensive care decreased by eight, and patients on ventilators decreased by two since Thursday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 8,428 with 7,779 resolved. Of those cases, there are 284 active cases, decreasing by three since Thursday and 22 active outbreaks, down by one since Thursday.
