Ontario reported 2,557 new cases of COVID-19 today, any increase from yesterday’s report of 2,333.
The Niagara Region reported 104 new cases today, an increase from yesterday’s report of 68.
There were also 23 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 7,389 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported one COVID-19 death on Wednesday. No new deaths were reported today. In total, 376 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 2,557 cases of #COVID19 and nearly 62,300 tests completed. Locally, there are 743 new cases in Toronto, 484 in Peel, 311 in York Region, 131 in Ottawa, 119 in Hamilton and 107 in Durham,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Thursday morning.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 137,914 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Thursday bringing the total number of vaccines administered so far across the country to more than 5,828,294. That means that 13.519 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine.
Over 84,060 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 2,276,313 administered across the province so far. That’s 15.438 per cent of the provincial population.
Niagara Health reported 627 new doses were administered as of Thursday morning.
A total of 23,532 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes.
A total of 23,532 people have been vaccinated in Niagara Region by Niagara Public Health. Niagara Health says it has administered 48,243 vaccinations to health care staff.
The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 71,775. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 16.025 per cent of the region’s residents have been vaccinated so far.

The region reported 104 cases, the first report above 100 since Jan. 28 when 111 cases were reported. Cases numbers have risen above and below 50 over the weekend and throughout the beginning of the week. Saturday’s report was above 50, Sunday and Monday’s numbers dropped back below 50. Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s numbers were back above 50 with 65 cases and 68 cases reported.
Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. Numbers also remained below the previous daily record of 196 reported on Friday, Jan. 8.
No new COVID-19 related deaths have been reported over the weekend or beginning of the week. One new death was reported on Wednesday. No new deaths were reported today. The COVID-19 death count measured since the start of the pandemic is 376.
1,116 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 352,460 total cases, with 324,196 cases resolved. There are 1,116 cases in hospitals, with 433 in intensive care and 259 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases increased by five, the number of those in intensive care increased by 37, and patients on ventilators increased by seven since Wednesday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 9,788 with 8,801 resolved. Of those cases, there are 611 active cases, up by 66 since Wednesday and 27 active outbreaks, same as Wednesday.
