Ontario reports 2,998 new COVID-19 cases with 100 new deaths; Niagara reports 152 with five new deaths

The Ontario government reported 2,998 COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, bringing the seven-day average to 3,273.

The Niagara Region reported 152 new cases today, a increase from yesterday’s report of 136.

There were also 100 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 5,289 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date. However, due to a data entry error, 46 deaths reported in Middlesex-London that occurred earlier in the pandemic are included in Ontario’s daily report today.

Niagara Region reported five new COVID-19 deaths on Thursday. In total, 213 people have died from the virus in the region.

“Ontario is reporting 2,998 cases of #COVID19 and nearly 76,500 tests completed. Locally, there are 800 new cases in Toronto, 618 in Peel, 250 in York Region, 161 in Waterloo and 153 in Niagara,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Twitter Friday morning.

Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include London with 148 new cases, Hamilton with 138 new cases, Ottawa with 133 cases, Durham Region with 113 cases, Halton Region with 81 cases, and Simcoe-Muskoka with 73. Other public health units reported 70 cases or less.

Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara

More than 15,609 vaccine doses were administered in Canada bringing the total number of vaccines administered so far across the country to more than 433,446. That means that 1.182 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine

Over 15,609 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 174,630 administered across the province so far. That’s 1.184 per cent of the provincial population.

An initial vaccine supply arrived in the Niagara Region Tuesday. Approximately 446 new doses were administered by Friday morning by Niagara Public Health. A total of 608 doses have been administered in the region, all in long-term care homes.

Niagara Health said it vaccinated 108 long-term care home workers and 70 hospital staff and physicians on Jan 13. An update on any further doses have yet to be reported.

The Niagara Region numbers skyrocketed to 471 cases on Monday, more than doubling the previous new daily record of 196 reported on Friday, Jan. 8. This is also the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region. However, it was due to a backlog of cases being updated.

Wednesday’s numbers moved up again closer to the previous daily record of 196. Today report of 152 and yesterday’s report of 136 fell in line with the past week’s reports that remained above 100.

The death count went up by five today. This brings the total number of deaths to 213. Deaths are reported three times per week by NRPH on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

1,647 cases in Ontario hospitals

Ontario has now had 231,308 total cases, with 197,194 cases resolved. There are 1,647 cases in hospitals, with 387 in intensive care and 280 on ventilators.

Hospitalized cases decreased by 10, the number of those in intensive care decreased by two, and patients on ventilators remained the same since Thursday.

The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 6,262 with 4,493 resolved. Of those cases, there are 1,556 active cases, increasing by 18 since yesterday and 49 active outbreaks, with one new outbreak since yesterday.
