Ontario reports drop in COVID-19 daily cases down 580 to 1,009; Niagara Region surpasses 2,000 total cases

Ontario reported 1,009 new COVID-19 cases today, a 580-case drop over yesterday’s report of 1,589.

The Niagara Region surpassed 2,000 total cases with 24 cases reported today.

“Ontario is reporting 1,009 cases of #COVID19. Locally, there are 497 new cases in Toronto, 175 in Peel and 118 in York Region. There are 1,082 more resolved cases and nearly 27,100 tests completed,” said Health Minister Christine Elliott on Twitter this morning.

Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Waterloo with 40 new cases and Windsor with 31 new cases. Other public health units reported 30 cases or less.

There are 14 new deaths reported in Ontario today. This brings the total number of COVID-19 deaths in the province to 3,519. There were no new deaths reported today in Niagara. In total, 81 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.

Niagara saw a spike of cases this weekend with 36 cases reported on Saturday. This is the highest daily case count since Nov. 10 when the region saw a new record high of 63 cases. The previous high was on June 3 with 40 cases.

534 cases in Ontario hospitals

Ontario has now had 106,510 total cases, with 90,074 cases resolved. There are currently 534 cases in hospitals, with 159 in intensive care and 91 on ventilators.

Hospitalized cases increased by 17, but the number of those in intensive increased by three and patients on ventilators remained decreased by one since yesterday.

The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region is now at 2,021 with 1,725 resolved. Of those cases, there are 215 active cases, increasing by seven since yesterday and 17 active outbreaks, up by one since yesterday.
