A stand-off between an aggressive nude man and Niagara police officers at a Grimsby residence near an elementary school ended peacefully with the man’s arrest Wednesday.
Uniform officers from Niagara Regional Police Service were called to the area of Murray St and Olive St. at 10 a.m. near Lakeview Public School in Grimsby. Police were responding to “response to a nude male attempting to enter numerous houses in the area.”
“Subsequently, two officers were assaulted and the male barricaded himself inside his residence in the area,” said Niagara police.
Police say an officer was assaulted by the man when they engaged him to “ascertain the welfare of the male.”
When the man attacked the officers again they used a taser on him, but it was ineffective and the man fled on foot and barricaded himself in his nearby residence. The officers were not injured.
Crisis negotiators, the NRPS Emergency Task Unit, and uniform officers remain on scene to resolve the situation, police said.
Two blocks away, Lakeview Elementary School located at 33 Olive Street, Grimsby, was put on “lock and learn”.
Lakeview parents were sent this update by Lakeview principal Bob Blake at 3:09 p.m. Wednesday: “This morning at 10:30 a.m. we were notified by the Niagara Regional Police of a police investigation in our general area. Niagara Regional Police advised us there was no immediate threat to the school and students were not in danger. However, in a proactive measure to support staff and student safety, I was asked to place the school in Lock and Learn. In this situation, the school continues to function normally, with the exterior doors being locked until such time as the situation near the school is resolved.”
At approximately 6:07pm, the situation came to a peaceful end and the male was arrested.
Attila Buri, 50, of Grimsby, was arrested and charged two counts of “assault police”.
He was released on scene on a Form 10. That is a police term that allows officers to release an arrested person with a court date, fingerprint and mugshot date, and conditions to abide by until the matter is dealt with in court.
Buri has a future court date that will take place at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse, located at 59 Church Street, in the City of St. Catharines.
