Single Vehicle Leaving Roadway Leads to Arrest in Welland

On July 28, 2023, at 7:38am, 3 District (Welland / Pelham) uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) responded to a single vehicle collision with possible injuries in Welland.

Officers arrived on scene near South Pelham Road and Foss Road. Officers saw a white, 2022, Hyundai Sonata, off the roadway into the adjacent tree line. Officers spoke briefly with the driver of the Hyundai, who then suddenly ran from the scene into a wooded area. The driver swam through a nearby pond and ran into a residential neighbourhood to evade the pursuing officers.

An NRPS K9 Unit (Police Service Dog Jax) attended to conduct a track. They were assisted by 3 District uniform officers and officers from the NRPS Emergency Task Unit. 3 District uniform officers and detectives set up a containment perimeter in the nearby neighbourhood.

At 9:15am the driver was found hiding in a backyard on South Pelham Road and arrested.

An area retirement home had been placed in lock down out of an abundance of caution.

Mohamud Mohamud Hassan (32 yrs.) of Welland has been arrested and charged with the Criminal Code offences of:

Impaired Operation of a Conveyance – Drug Failure or Refusal to Comply with Demand – Drug Flight from Peace Officer Fail to Stop at the Scene of an Accident

Hassan was later released on a Form 10 undertaking with a future court date.
