On October 7, 2022, at approximately 9:20pm 1 District uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) responded to a report of a robbery in St. Catharines.
Officers attended a gas station on Queenston Street near Page Street. The initial investigation determined that a male suspect had entered the store and selected $47 worth of merchandise. The suspect threatened the clerk that he had a weapon. The clerk fled the store fearing for their safety, but not before locking the suspect in. The suspect in an attempt to escape began trashing the store. The suspect was set free and ran from the area.
The NRPS Real Time Operations Centre (RTOC) was able to track the movements of the suspect through a network of CCTV cameras in the area. Officers were directed to the suspect’s location in the area of Geneva Street and Church Street. At 9:35pm, the suspect was located and arrested. Merchandise from the robbery was recovered at the time of the arrest.
Kidus Dawit (34 years) of St. Catharines has been arrested and charged with the criminal offence of:
Robbery – s. 343(a) CC
Dawit was held in custody for a video bail hearing that occurred on October 8, 2022, at the Robert. S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines. He was subsequently released from custody with a future court date.
