On May 27th, 2023, at 9:51pm Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) officers assigned to 1 District (St. Catharines / Thorold) responded to a parking lot on Gale Crescent near Riordon Street, in the City of St. Catharines regarding a stabbing that had just occurred.
Upon arrival, officers located the victim, a 40-year-old male from the City of St. Catharines who was suffering from a non-life-threatening stab wound to his left hand. Niagara Emergency Medical Service (NEMS) paramedics responded to the scene and assessed the victim who was ultimately transported to a local hospital for treatment. He has since been released and continues to recover from his injuries at home.
Investigation has determined the suspect approached the victim who was sitting in his car and asked if he had change for a $20.00 bill. When the victim advised he did not, the suspect drew a knife and stabbed the victim in his hand. The victim was able to leave the scene in his vehicle and contact 9-1-1 for assistance. Responding officers located the suspect a short distance away and placed him under arrest. It has been determined the suspect and victim were known acquaintances.
Kelvin Justin BASCUS (38 years) has been arrested and charged with the following Criminal Code offence:
• Assault with a weapon
BASCUS was held for a bail hearing that took place on May 28th, 2023, via video link to the John Sopinka Courthouse, located at 45 Main Street East in the City of Hamilton. He has since been remanded into the custody of Ontario Correctional Services.
