The male victim involved in this incident succumbed to his injuries in hospital on August 27, 2024.
As a result of the death of the 68-year-old male, Niagara Regional Police Service Homicide Detectives have continued their investigation, and the initial charge of aggravated assault has been upgraded.
34-year-old Raymond Douglas Warner of No Fixed Address is now facing the charge of:
– Second Degree Murder
Warner appeared in court on Wednesday September 11, 2024, at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse in the City of St. Catharines and was remanded into custody.

UPDATE 2 – Detectives Investigating Assault in St. Catharines
On August 10, 2024, 1 District (St. Catharines / Thorold) detectives with the Niagara Regional Police Service began investigating an assault that occurred in the City of St. Catharines. As a result of the investigation, detectives identified the suspect as Raymond Douglas Warner (34 yrs.) of no fixed address.
On August 20, 2024, detectives appealed to the public for information that may lead to the location and arrest of Warner. Within hours of the public appeal, detectives were able to locate and arrest Warner in the City of St. Catharines.
Raymond Douglas Warner has been arrested and charged with the Criminal Code offence of:
Aggravated Assault
Warner is being held in custody for a video bail hearing to the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines on August 21, 2024.
Detectives would like to thank the public for their assistance in this matter. This remains an ongoing investigation as detectives are interested in identifying and speaking with the three additional males that were with Warner at the time of this assault. UPDATE 1 – Detectives Investigating Assault in St. Catharines
Detectives from the 1 District (St. Catharines/Thorold) office of the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) are continuing to investigate this incident. Investigators have now determined the victim was in the area of Merritt Steet and Townline Road East, in the City of St. Catharines when he randomly encountered a group of four men. Moments after the encounter, one of the males in the group approached the victim and repeatedly struck him, leaving the victim injured on the ground.
As a result of this investigation, detectives have identified the suspect as Raymond Douglas Warner (34 years old) from the Niagara Region of no fixed address. Warner’s current location is unknown. He is believed to have ties to St. Catharines and Thorold.
A warrant for the arrest of Warner has been issued for the Criminal Code offence of:
Aggravated Assault.
Detectives are encouraging Warner to seek legal counsel and turn himself in to the NRPS.
Warner is described as (see photo) a white male, approximately 5’8” tall. He has a slender build and is approximately 125 lbs. He has short straight light brown hair with hazel eyes. Warner has a scar on the left side of his upper lip.

ORIGINAL RELEASE
On August 10, 2024, 1 District (St. Catharines/Thorold), uniform officers with the Niagara Regional Police Service attended the area of Merritt Street and Townline Road E, in the City of St. Catharines, in response to welfare check.
Investigation revealed that a male victim was assaulted and injured.
Niagara Emergency Medical Services attended and transported the male to hospital with serious injuries.
Detectives with 1 District have taken carriage of the investigation.
