Used Vehicle Purchasing Advisory

The Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) is aware of fraudulent sales and advertising when purchasing used vehicles from online marketplaces.

As a precaution, when purchasing a used vehicle, the NRPS is encouraging members of the community to:

1.  Run a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Check

Use a reputable service like Carfax Canada to obtain a detailed vehicle history report. The report will show – Theft status, accident history, title status, lien status. Obtain a used vehicle information package – this can be found online and in person at Service Ontario.

2.  Check the VIN in Multiple Places

Ask for the VIN before meeting. Check that the VIN matches in these spots: Dashboard (driver’s side visible through windshield), Driver’s door sticker or pillar, ownership papers/registration.

3.  Ask for and Examine the Ownership/Registration

Make sure the name on the ownership matches the seller’s photo ID. Verify the license plate number on the vehicle matches the registration. Watch out for: the seller claiming to be selling for a friend/family member, where they have “lost” ownership. You should be given the vehicle portion of the owner’s permit with the completed portion on the back.

4.  Other Considerations

If something feels “off” – such as: unusually low price, reluctance to provide ID or documents, seller pushing for fast cash deals – walk away. If possible, have a trusted mechanic check the vehicle for you prior to purchase. Your insurance company is a great resource, contact them prior to finalizing your purchase. Obtain a bill of sale from the seller and make sure both you and the seller sign it. Register your new vehicle within 6 days of purchase- this can be completed at Service Ontario.

The Niagara Regional Police Service is committed to protecting the safety and security of the community. We appreciate the public’s assistance in staying alert and informed as we continue to help prevent these incidents.
